Meet Our Teaching Pastor: Mark DeVine
Pastor Mark DeVine is a recent addition to Smoke Rise Baptist Church, and we are excited to have him. Mark DeVine brings to SRBC a profound experience in transitional ministry and a passion for the gospel.
Mark DeVine was initially born in Atlanta, Georgia, but grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
From there, he went on to get his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University. Then, he pursued his Master of Divinity and his Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
He has been married to his wife, Jackie Moore DeVine, for 38 plus years and shares two adult sons. His two sons, Drew (33) and Sam (29) live in Hoover, Alabama, and Columbus, Ohio, respectively. Although both of his sons are single, he would love to be a grandfather someday!
In his free time, he loves to read, take bike rides with his wife, and take day trips. His favorite topics to read about include history, theology, poetry, and sports!
Although Mark originally attended Clemson University, intending to become an electrical engineer, God disturbed his conscience, calling him to the ministry. From there, Mark surrendered to God’s call and worked as the pastor of five different churches in five other states. He has also been the transitional pastor of 20 different churches.
Throughout his career, Mark has served as a teacher and written extensive publications for various theological journals.
He was affirmed by the members of SRBC to serve as an Elder of SRBC alongside the other acting elders. We are elated to have him serve as the Teaching Pastor.
The Smoke Rise Community
Mark DeVine is hugely excited to serve SRBC. His favorite aspects of SRBC are–of course–the people. He feels that the community is so warm and welcoming he can’t help but feel comfortable here.
When asked about SRBC’s community, he stated, “I just like them!”
Favorite Bible Verse
Although Mark’s favorite bible verse changes from time to time, his current favorite is Matthew 16:18.
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
This bible verse speaks to Mark because it reminds him that Jesus is busy building his church. This verse encourages Mark that when he’s helping churches, he is cooperating with the Lord.
Meet Mark DeVine on Sundays at Smoke Rise Baptist Church! If you’re considering joining and want more information on getting connected, check out our website for upcoming events! We hold small groups, a worship service on Sundays, and various activities for students on Wednesdays.
